P2 Roles of Tour Operator, Thomas Cook, ownership, aims, contribution to the economy AJW
Thomas Cook is the largest private sector tour operator in the UK with over 800 stores
all over. They aim to sell lots of holidays and make a profit. Unfortunately Thomas Cook has had a lot of bad times recently and have had to sell off quite a lot of their company.
They operate a fleet of 44 aircrafts and they fly from various regional airports to destinations worldwide. Thomas Cook started when Thomas Cook himself decided in 1841 that he would conduct outings for temperance societies and Sunday-school children.
He asked the railway to charge one shilling per person which included rail tickets and food for this train journey. Cook then got a share of the takings that the public paid for the journey. In 1844 the Midland Counties Railway Company agreed to make a permanent arrangement with him provided he found the passengers. This success led him to start his own business running rail excursions for pleasure, taking a percentage of the railway tickets. In 1850 he planned his first excursion abroad, when he took a group from Leicester to Calais to coincide with the Paris Exhibition. Cook renamed the travel agent Thomas cook and son when he joined with John A Mason Cook they owned a store which sold essential travel accessories including guide books, luggage, telescopes and footwear. Because of this Cook had stopped personal tours and became an agent for foreign or domestic travel. Year after year the travel agent got bigger and better going further around the world.
Thomas Cook are still very much the same as when the business first started as they sell charter flights and package holidays to families. They have integrated brands such as Air tours, Club 18-30, cresta, CruiseThomasCook, Direct Holidays, Elegant Resorts, Essential Travel, Flexibletrips, flythomascook.com, Gold Medal, hotels4u.com, Manos, Medhotels, Neilson, Netflights.com, Pure Luxury, Sentido, Style Holidays, Sunset, Sun world Holidays Ireland, Swiss Travel Service, The Big Reunion, The Big Snow Festival, Thomas Cook, Thomas Cook Essentials, Thomas Cook Signature, Thomas Cook Tours and Thomas Cook Sport. All these brands are travel operators under the Thomas cook umbrella which makes them horizontally integrated.
P3 Interrelationships and integration examples AJW
Tour operators MUST be a member of ATOL, (air transport organisers licence), to make sure all there holidays they sell are protected from anything that could happen. They
also need to make sure they are following UK laws such as DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) and HASAW (Health And Safety At Work Act) this means that people can still have the chance at a job even with a disability as long as they have carried out a risk assessment and it is in line with the HASAW rules and regulations.

Sustainable Tourism...
Sustainable tourism is looking after what is already here to preserve it for the future. It’s about making a positive difference to the environment of destinations we travel by respecting the local cultures and the natural environment we can do this by buying from the locals which gives a fair economic return to the local families. It also recognises
that water and energy are precious resources in some areas and we need to use it
carefully. People need to take responsibility for their actions while enjoying themselves making sure they protect and enhance favourite destinations for future enjoyment of visitors and the people who live there too.
Over 160 years ago Thomas Cook created the first package holiday out of a sense of social responsibility. The Thomas Cook name lives on as one of the world’s best known and respected brands in travel.

Thomas Cook and UK the economy...
Thomas Cook have a negative effect on the UK’s economy as they take money out of the UK and gets spent on goods and services provided by overseas destinations. They have a positive effect on the countries they are travelling to as they providing money for local businesses. Thomas Cook have over 800 stores in the UK so therefore they employ a massive amount of people which is a positive effect as they are paying staff in English pounds which is being spent elsewhere in the UK. This benefit is called the multiplier effect and that is where money is spent and then re-spent elsewhere in the economy. E.g. A tourist buys a hotel room, the hotel employ staff, a waiter gets paid and pays his rent, his landlord then uses the money to buy clothes and the circle goes on and on.
