Hurricanes:
Hurricane Sandy was the second costliest hurricane in U.S history. It affected around 24 states with a total of $52.4. The hurricane started on the 22nd October as a tropical wave which then got upgraded to a tropical sand storm as it strengthened. As it slowly moved north it intensified. On the 24th October it became a hurricane and once it hit the Caribbean Sea it was classified as a category 2 hurricane.
This hurricane cause 200,000 to be left homeless and killed around 64 people.
Hurricanes effect the travel and tourism in a massive way especially when the hurricane travels through many different places as the further it gets the more damage is done. When this happens it makes people travel to other places as there will be nothing for a tourist to do. As travel and tourism is one of the biggest sectors in the world which brings money into each country, it puts a stop to businesses earning money.

The cost of travel...
The cost of travelling is making it harder and harder for people to travel. This creates the multiplier effect. if people aren't going away, the travel agents cannot sell the holidays provided by tour operators and they also cannot sell the ancillaries, which makes more and more companies lose money. although it will more than likely promote more domestic tourism, it has a massive effect on outbound tourism and its economy.
Trends...
Independant travel...
because of recent media showing more people traveling to countries or around the world without getting package deals from travel agents. this is becoming more popular with people especially students who think it will be cheaper for them to buy a ticket to somewhere and travel around staying in cheap hostels. The more tourists see people finding better deals the more people will choose to stop getting there holidays through the travel agents.
increase in inbound tourism to the UK...
With things like the Royal Wedding and the Olympics happening in the UK, it is bringing in more inbound toursists which is a great thing for the english economy! When people talk about how they had a great time in England it makes more people want to visit the country. Most tourists choose to come into the UK because its cheap and easy and you don't need a visa to get in.
Increase in frequent holidays...
It is now law that all working people are entitled to a certain amount of days off for holidays. because of this, the amount of people going away has increased. This means that people are having more outbound or domestic holidays to visit friends and family or just to have a relaxing week off work.
