www.expedia.co.uk was made in 1998 and became the largest online holiday travel website as it sells pre made package holidays but also allows you to create your own package holiday with all the feature you want. Merger of Thompson holidays and First choise...
Although on the high street these companies are both well known and sell there own products but they both decided to fly under one name, TUI.In 2007 Thomas Cook and Mytravel decided to merge under the TUI name. Since 2008 they have been flying successfully together.
Introduction of easy jet...
Easy jet is a low budget airline that gives you the ability to go on short haul flights without the extra add ons that some people see as unnecessary. Their belief is that if they provide cheap flights the more people will want to fly with their company. These flights are very popular with people that only want to go away VFR or for business as they are cheap and easy to find if you only want to go for one or two days.
Better technology...
Better technology means that more and more retail travel agents are loosing business because people are booking there holidays online and making there holiday the way they want instead of going to the travel agents and getting a package holiday with things that they don't want or need. People are also using the internent to book their own ancillaries and looking at comparison sites which give them details on where to find the best holiday price.

Boeing 707 is a jet aircraft which although carries fewer people is made smaller and lighter so that it is able to travel from one destination to the other fast than any other aircraft. This appeals mainly to bussiness men as it has the ability to get them to their destination quicker so they dont have to spend too long in a certain place.

This is also ideal for business men but those who are one a long haul flight as it is designed for comfort as a two story airplane aswell as speed. It is ideal for those who dont want to have to change flights to get somewhere as it has space for a comfortable sleep.
Introduction of APD (airline passenger duty)
APD is where a person is charged for air travel to help with environmental concerns although it was thought to be controversial as it seemed to be more tax for the government. There are four different APD bands in the world with different amounts to paid which also depends on how you're travelling. e.g. first or second class.

In 1994 the Queen opened the channel tunnel with French President Francois Mitterrand. This is one of the easiest and fastest ways to go from England to France as you can drive which means you dont have to think about car hire. you can take as much luggage that will fit in your car instead of having a limit.

in 1999 the Euro was introduced into 11 member states, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Spain, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal and Finland where the Euro replaced the French marc and the Deutschmarck. There are now 17 members of the Euro whom make up Europe. this is great for tourism because more people are able to travel without having to worry about changing their currency and the exchange rate.
