There are over 5000 travel outlets over the UK. They are in business to sell holidays and travel products.
There are three different types of travel agents:

- Miniples
- Independent
Miniples -
These are companies with a small number of branches often in a particular
geographical area. A good thing about these companies is that they can offer
the personal touch by being able to give independent advice on holiday
choices.
Examples: co-op travel.
Multiples -
they are companies which operate a chain of retail outlets throughout the UK under a single brand name. You usually see them on the high street
Examples : Thomson, Thomas Cook.
independent -
Independent tour operators are Tour Escorts that develop and promote their own
tours.
Examples: hays travel, Althams.
All of the above are part of the retail side of travel agents there are also web based travel agents such as Ice Lolly where you can book a holiday in the comfort of your own home over the internet or on the phone.
Call centre travels agents are usually advertised in the newspaper or on teletext. Their staff are based in an office or at home which is helpful for there staff if they have young children they need to look after. call centres dont have a store and you can only get in touch by phone.
All travel agents from retail, call centres and web-based are all part of the business sector as they all make money and profit from selling holidays.
